Last year was a bad year for banks. Consider this, before the economic collapse, maybe 20 banks would fail in a given year. Last year, regulators shut down 140. One of the biggest to fail was Cleveland’s AmTrust bank. It cost the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation more than $2 billion.
