ideastream, Sun Newspapers Are Latest Media Companies to Announce Cuts

Sun Newspaper's Executive Editor Linda Kinsey is readying front page editorials to run this week in five weekly papers. The last Sun paper for readers in Euclid, Bedford, Maple Heights/Garfield, Twinsburg, and Nordonia Heights will come out next week.

Linda Kinsey: "It just became apparent that we are not able to continue some of the losses that we've sustained in those areas."

Sun Newspapers are owned by the New Jersey-based Advance Publications, which also owns The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Starting August 6th, the Sun is launching 11 consolidated papers - down from 22 - for suburbs in the region. The number of editorial positions have been cut by about one-third.

Here at ideastream, state budget cuts mean that nine people have been laid off effective October 1. The company's three top managers are taking paycuts. ideastream's CEO Jerry Wareham said state funding for the company's educational and media services was cut nearly 60 percent in the recently approved budget. In a press release, the nonprofit said the moves were taken to maintain financial stability, but it did not rule out further cuts.
