WCLV Program Guide 07-16-2022

July 16

1782 premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Burgtheater in Vienna; Bartlett's Book of Anecdotes: “The Emperor Joseph II commissioned the creation of The Abduction from the Seraglio, but when he heard it, he complained to Mozart, 'That is too fine for my ears – there are too many notes.' Mozart replied, 'There are just as many notes as there should be'"; the authenticity of this exchange, made famous in the play and film Amadeus, is not accepted by all scholars.

1858 Eugène Ysaÿe – Belgian violinist, composer and conductor (d.1931); regarded as 'The King of the Violin', or, as Nathan Milstein put it, the 'Tsar.'

1904 Goffredo Petrassi – Italian composer, conductor and teacher (d.2003); one of the most influential Italian composers of the twentieth century.

1941 Geoffrey Burgon – English composer (d.2010); best known for his television and film scores.

1948 Pinchas Zukerman – Israeli-American violinist, violist, conductor (74 years old); one of the world's preeminent musicians; shared the Leventritt Prize in 1967 with violinist Kyung-Wha Chung.

1959 James MacMillan – Scottish composer and conductor (63 years old); came to the attention of the world with the BBC Scottish Symphony's premiere of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie at the BBC Proms in 1990.
