WCLV Program Guide 08-25-2019

august 25

1830 At a production of Daniel Auber's opera La muette de Portici (The Mute Girl of Portici) at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels, a riot broke out during the patriotic and revolutionary duet Amour sacré de la patrie; that riot ignited the Belgian Revolution, leading to the expulsion of the Dutch and the independence of the Belgians.

1880 Robert Stoltz – Austrian songwriter, conductor and composer of operettas and film music (d.1975); received two Oscar nominations in the '40s.

1902 Stefan Wolpe – German-born American composer and teacher (d.1972); Elliott Carter said of him: "Comet-like radiance, conviction, fervent intensity, penetrating thought on many levels of seriousness and humor, combined with breathtaking adventurousness and originality, marked the inner and outer life of Stefan Wolpe, as they do his compositions."

1918 Leonard Bernstein – American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist (d.1990); among the first conductors born and educated in the United States to receive worldwide acclaim; the New York Times said of him: "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history"; many of his compositions are regularly performed around the world, although none has matched the tremendous popular and commercial success of West Side Story.

1959 Ruth Ann Swenson – American soprano (59 years old); renowned for her coloratura roles.
