Rates of suicide in farmers raise alarms, Ohio State University steps in to help

Farmers are facing economic hardships and isolation.

Every day we buy our food from grocery stores and markets. As we pile up our shopping carts with produce, it is easy to overlook who made that all possible - farmers.

There's another aspect of America's farming communities that's easy to overlook mental health.

According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study from 2016, farmer suicide deaths rose 40 percent in the last twenty years.

Here in Ohio, some organizations are working in farming communities to prevent those deaths through counseling and therapy programs. The Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences created an extension service, staffed with mental health experts, to help Ohio's farmers.

Today on The Sound of Ideas, we'll talk about this new service - and why rates of suicide and depression are on the rise in those agricultural positions.

Later in the hour, a look at another public radio station in Ohio working to preserve their archives, WYSO in Yellow Springs.

Jocelyn Robinson, who oversees much of that archival material talks to us about the efforts, and what gems they’ve unearthed.

She'll also discuss how the preservation of this material doesn't just focus on the voices of famous individuals, but how WYSO is working to preserve community voices as well.

Finally our David C. Barnett looks at the induction of German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They may be, the most influential band you’ve never heard of.
