New Ghosts, Maxine Gordon, Terry Teachout
SOA celebrates National Jazz Appreciation Month, as Dan Polletta talks to two of the founders of New Ghosts. The organization, which takes its name from a piece by Cleveland free-jazz pioneer Albert Ayler, is dedicated to presenting experimental jazz concerts in Northeast Ohio. This Friday evening at 7:30, New Ghosts and Shadybrook present celebrated pianist Marilyn Crispell in a duo performance with NEO based drummer Carmen Castaldi. The concert takes place at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River. Plus Maxine Gordon, widow of the late tenor saxophone giant Dexter Gordon shares memories of her husband…and Dan talks to writer Terry Teachout about what made Duke Ellington one of the key figures of 20th century music.
