Wildfire Update

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA IS SCORCHED.

HELLO EVERYONE, I’M RICK JACKSON. THANKS FOR JOINING US.

CREWS CONTINUE BATTLING WILDFIRES THAT SWEPT THROUGH SONOMA COUNTY AND OTHER AREAS OF THE GOLDEN STATE.

THOUSANDS OF HOMES HAVE BURNT TO THE GROUND, AND THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN DISPLACED - AS THE FIRE HAS NOW DESTROYED MORE ACREAGE THAN IS CONTAINED IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF MARYLAND….

CHECK OUT THESE IMAGES NASA CAPTURED. ( SHORT PAUSE) YOU CAN SEE THE SMOKE BILLOWING FROM MULTIPLE FIRES.

REMEMBER A FEW WEEKS AGO WHEN WE TOLD YOU HOW THE GRAPES HERE WERE SHRIVELING UP INTO RAISINS? WELL THE VERY HOT AND VERY DRY WEATHER CONDITIONS OVER THE SUMMER MADE THE LANDSCAPE PERFECT FUEL FOR THE FIRES.

ONE MAN EVEN CAUGHT FOOTAGE OF THIS TREE BURNING FROM THE INSIDE OUT WHILE HE ESCAPED THE AREA.

NOW OCTOBER IS WILDFIRE SEASON FOR THE AREA, BUT THIS YEAR’S BEEN PARTICULARLY DESTRUCTIVE. OUR REPORTER HAS THE LATEST.

KARIN: THERE ARE 11-THOUSAND FIREFIGHTERS ON THE GROUND IN CALIFORNIA RIGHT NOW BATTLING MORE THAN A DOZEN DEADLY WILDFIRES

BELIA RAMOS: YOU'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SEE CAL FIRE PRESENCE, FIRE CREW PRESENCE FOR AWHILE, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO DEPART TODAY, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO DEPART TOMORROW. WE GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF US.

KARIN: FIRES THAT HAVE BURNED MORE THAN 200-THOUSAND ACRES, DESTROYING THOUSANDS OF HOMES AND BUSINESSES STATEWIDE.

BARRY BIERMANN: WE STILL HAVE EXTREMELY DRY CONDITIONS OUT THERE, VERY LOW HUMIDITY. THERE IS STILL A CHANCE WE COULD HAVE SOME SMALL FIRES OUT OF THE FIRE.

KARIN: TEN OF THOUSANDS ARE STILL UNDER MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS

MEANWHILE, OFFICIALS IN BOTH CALIFORNIA AND WASHINGTON SAY THEY ARE MAKING PROGRESS.

BRETT GOUVEA: YOU ARE SEEING THOSE CONTAINMENT LEVELS COMING UP. THINGS FEEL GOOD IN OUR GUT AS FIREFIGHTERS.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: WE HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE HELPING THE GOVERNMENT IN CALIFORNIA AND MADE A LOT OF PROGRESS IN THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS.

KARIN: ALSO IN WASHINGTON THE SENATE IS EXPECTED TO VOTE THIS WEEK ON A NEARLY 36.5 BILLION DOLLAR EMERGENCY FUNDING BILL THAT WOULD PROVIDE MUCH NEEDED MONEY FOR THE STATES HARD HIT RECENTLY BY BOTH HURRICANES AND WILDFIRES.

IN SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA, I'M KARIN CAIFA.
