U.S. Response to ISIS

World leaders from over 20 countries met in Paris this week to figure out how to respond to the militant group known as ISIS.

ISIS stands for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the areas in the Middle East where the group is most active.President Obama has referred to ISIS as a terrorist organization. That's a group of people who use violence against civilians to promote their political, social, or religious goals. The United States is asking for support from other countries around the globe to help fight ISIS in the Middle East. Secretary of State John Kerry represented the U.S. at the meeting in France. Diplomats and leaders from 20 other countries were in attendance to discuss the best tactics to beat ISIS. About 40 countries, mostly from Europe but also some from the Middle East, have agreed to be a part of the U.S.-led coalition. It's unclear, though, what country will take what role in the fight.

Earlier this summer the U.S. sent an additional 300 troops to deal with the threat of ISIS militants, bringing the current total to 800 American troops in Iraq.
