. Our A+ this week goes to a girl who turned her big idea into something awesome.
Zoe Wolfe is a fifth grader at Orchard Hill Intermediate School in North Canton. Zoe wanted to make disability awareness kits, and so she submitted a grant proposal to the North Canton Character Counts Foundation. And it paid off. She was awarded $200 to create the kits for her school and for the North Canton Public Library, where anyone can check it out.
The kits contain instructional sheets, hands-on activities, and discussion questions about a variety of different disabilities. Zoe even trained her school's teachers how to use the kits in class. Zoe's mom, Melissa Wolfe, tells us that Zoe was motivated to make the kits because she had witnessed instances when typical students focused on a student's disability instead of the student as a person.
Zoe herself has dyslexia, which is sometimes referred to as a hidden disability. She has learned that once she explains her disability to her peers, they become more understanding and accepting of her. Zoe wants other students to understand that we are more alike than different, and she hopes that these kits will help her community be more inclusive to people with disabilities. We hope so too, Zoe.
