A Plus: Riley Dexter, JDRF Youth Ambassador

Now finally, this week our A Plus goes to another girl who knows how to handle her diabetes and is teaching other kids as well. Riley Dexter is an 11-year-old student from Independence, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was three years old.

Having type 1 diabetes means that Riley must constantly monitor her own blood sugar, and she wears a device called a pod in order to keep her blood sugar at safe levels. It's a lot of work every single day!

It's also something that many people don't fully understand. So, Riley decided that she wanted to help raise awareness about diabetes. She applied to be a youth ambassador through JDRF, that's an organization committed to helping find a cure for diabetes.

Youth ambassadors must commit to completing at least 20 hours of service, through attending outreach events and sharing their stories with the public. Riley says she is looking forward to meeting other kids living with type 1 diabetes, and she wants to become more comfortable talking about it, and help other kids become more comfortable living with it.

All of which adds up to why we wanna recognize Riley as this week's NewsDepth A Plus!
