On this episode of Applause we take a look at what we did this summer with many of our WCPN 90.3 and WVIZ/PBS ideastream listeners, viewers, family and friends.
Of all the road trips our ideastream team took this summer, this one may have been the easiest. Just a few steps west of the Idea Center on Euclid Avenue in Playhouse Square is our new neighbor - The Galleries at Cleveland State University, that we dropped in on and took a tour with Robert Thurmer, the Art Gallery Director.
Another place that we visited this summer is the oldest indoor -- outdoor market in Cleveland, the Westside Market. Its origins date back to 18-40, when two men gave Ohio City a piece of land at the corner of what is now West 25th and Lorain, with the agreement that it always be kept as a public market. As Cleveland grew, so did the need for a bigger market. So, in 1902, the city purchased the land across the street from the original market…and ten years later, the new West Side Market opened, where it still thrives 100 years later. In celebration of the Market's one-hundredth anniversary, in October, we present "Savor-100 Years at the West Side Market, " a new documentary produced by our partners, The Plain Dealer. "Savor" looks at the people who've been going to the market for a century, and those who've served them...
Bettors, boozers…Movie stars and B girls…degenerates and captains of industry…For a good part of the 20th century you could find them living it up on a street “not far from The Galleries at Playhouse Square,” that was actually more of an alley between East 6th and 9th in downtown Cleveland… We wandered over to what used to be one of the city’s most colorful streets with Alan Dutka as our tour guide. Alan is the author of the new book “Cleveland's Short Vincent-The Theatrical Grill and its Notorious Neighbors."
