Good morning and welcome to the Year of the Pig on this Feb. 5, 2019, the Chinese Lunar New Year.   

Cuyahoga County's inspector general says former corrections director Ken Mills likely made homophobic comments while on the job.   The I.G.'s reportsaid county employees also told investigators about other discriminatory comments.  The report was released the same day Mills appeared in court for his arraignment on corruption charges.  He pleaded not guilty.  So did former county  IT general counsel Emily McNeeley and chief talent officer Douglas Dykes.

Advocates detailed their plans to address Cleveland's lead crisis, saying they'll launch a signature drive to get the measure on the ballot if Cleveland's city council fails to pass their plan into law.  Cleveland Lead Advocates for Safe Housing want landlords to certify their homes as lead safe by 2021.  Members say the plan would include a fund to help "mom and pop" landlords pay for lead remediation.  The bill is based on one proposed by former City Councilman Jeff Johnson in 2017.

Fifteen children were treated and released from UH's Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital after eating gummy bears that may have contained marijuana at their elementary school. Media outlets had been reporting various numbers of children affected, but WKYC TV cites a spokesperson for RBCH on a total of 15 children treated.  The affected students at Anton Grdina Elementary School on Cleveland's East Side were as young as five.

In Lorain, a jury has started deliberations on whether Elliott Kirkland should get the death penalty for shooting and killing Jimmie Holland Jr. in 2016.  The jury could also choose to send the 29-year-old Kirkland to life in prison without parole.

The Indians and Cavs made trades.  The Tribe picked up righty Nick Wittgren from the Miami Marlins in an effort to bolster their bullpen.  The Cavs traded Rodney Hood to the Portland Trailblazers for guards Nik Stauskas and Wade Baldwin.
