More than 190 people applied to be a member of the Community Police Commission, according to a statement from the Commission’s selection panel today. As part of the Consent Decree reached between Cleveland and the US Justice Department earlier this year, the new commission will help reform the city’s police department. The selection panel has until early September to choose 10 people representing different perspectives -- including faith-based groups, civil rights advocates and mental illness experts -- to serve on the Commission for a four year term. The application deadline was last Thursday and the panel expects a few more applications to trickle in by mail this week. Three police organizations -- Black Shield, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association -- will each choose a representative to serve on the Commission, making a total of 13.
