The Cleveland Clinic announced the country's first uterus transplant has failed.

Just a day after the Clinic held a press conference detailing the first uterus transplant, doctors had to remove it from the patient identified as Lindsey.

Clinic officials said in a statement the 26-year-old woman "experienced a sudden complication that led to the removal of her transplanted uterus."

Doctors performed the transplant less than two weeks ago as part of a clinical trial. Lindsey appeared with her husband at the Monday press conference where her physicians said she was healing well.

They also talked about the risks involved and said they would wait a year before  trying to impregnate Lindsey, to first see if her body wouldn’t reject the organ.

In a written statement Wednesday, Lindsey thanked doctors for their quick action to ensure her health and safety and that she is doing okay.

The Clinic plans to run tests to determine what went wrong.
