Lots of older folks live in constant fear of falling. And rightfully so, according to the State Department of Aging. The number of fatal falls among older Ohioans increased more than 165 percent between 2000 and 2012. Nationwide, falls remain the leading cause of accidental death for those over 65, as well as a major reason elderly patients end up in nursing homes. As part of our continuing Be Well series on caregiving, ideastream’s Kay Colby takes a closer look at why falls can be so dangerous and what can be done to prevent them.
