Cleveland Looking to Buy Riot Gear for RNC

The Republican National Convention is about four months away and the city of Cleveland wants to make sure law enforcement has the necessary supplies.

The city of Cleveland posted its request this week to buy more than two thousand sets of riot gear that will include uniforms with strong plastic outer plates and hard shell shin guards.

Also on the list: Kevlar gloves that are fire and cut resistant and 26-inch collapsible batons.

The city will use a $50 million federal security grant to help cover costs for the equipment.  Congress approved the funding last year for the Republican National Convention which is designated a National Special Security Event and qualifies for federal assistance.

City officials wouldn't say at this time how much all the equipment will cost.

Back in 2012, at the last RNC, in Tampa, Florida, local officials there spent more than three million dollars on uniforms and gear.  That included gas masks and body armor, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

They also used federal dollars to help cover expenses.

Cleveland is taking bids for supplying security equipment through March 30th.
