5 things to do in NEO: Indie films at Cinematheque and Nightlight and Dobama's "Hurricane Diane"

Northeast Ohio's two arthouse theaters showcase a couple of acclaimed indies while Dobama Theatre unleashes "Hurricane Diane." Here are five recommendations for your arts and culture to-do list this week.

"The French Dispatch"

Fans of director Wes Anderson can see his latest, "The French Dispatch," starring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet this weekend at the Cleveland Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Anderson's latest comic concoction is a collection of three stories centering around a fictional French magazine.

"Drive My Car"

Making many top 10 lists for 2021, "Drive My Car" tells the story of a theater director coping with the loss of his wife, based on a story by award-winning Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. The Nightlight in Akron screens the film critics are calling a "masterpiece" through Jan. 27.

"Hurricane Diane"

"Desperate Housewives" meets Greek tragicomedy in Dobama Theatre's regional premiere of " Hurricane Diane" by Madeleine George. The Greek god Dionysus is a permaculture gardener in this modern retelling of "The Bacchae" onstage Jan. 21 - Feb. 13.

"Heart Gallery"

The new exhibition " Heart Gallery" pairs local artists with children waiting to be adopted, resulting in personal portraits on display at the Massillon Museum. The partnership with the Stark County Job and Family Services is on view through Feb. 13.

78th Street Studios Third Friday

The monthly art walk and open house known as  Third Friday is this Friday, Jan. 21, at 78th Street Studios, featuring new work from resident artists along with live music throughout the building. Free registration is available via its website.
