Michael D. Johnson will begin his tenure as John Carroll University’s 25 th president on July 1, 2018.
Johnson, who currently serves as Provost of Babson College in Massachusetts, was elected to head the Cleveland-area university by its Board of Directors Dec. 6. His contract will extend through 2023.
At Babson, Johnson oversees all academic affairs and serves as a Professor of Marketing. He will continue that teaching role at John Carroll, joining the Boler School of Business as a professor in its department of Management, Marketing and Supply Chain.
Johnson follows Dr. Jeanne M. Colleran, who has been serving as John Carroll’s interim president since June of this year when Rev. Robert L. Niehoff retired from the post. Niehoff had served as the Jesuit university’s president since 2005.
“The passion that the students, faculty, staff and alumni have for John Carroll is inspiring,” Johnson said in a written statement, “and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this community.”
A native of North Dakota, Johnson grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and has spent his career teaching at higher education institutions, including the University of Michigan and Cornell University.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Johnson’s hiring was the result of a nationwide search, led by a 12-member Presidential Search Committee that included members of the John Carroll Board of directors, as well as students, faculty and staff.
