Barriers for African American Women Navigating Breast Cancer Treatment

According to a report released in late 2015 by the American Cancer Society, the rate at which African American women get diagnosed with breast cancer has increased and now mirrors the rate of white women – which historically has been higher.  The troubling fact is … African American women continue to die “more” from the disease. The National Cancer Institute cites many factors associated with this noted health disparity including lack of health insurance and poor access to state of the art cancer care. To get a taste of some of the barriers local African American women face, ideastream’s Kay Colby followed one woman’s journey.
