Portman Opposes Senate Health Care Bill

Just hours after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell postponed a vote on the Republican health care proposal, Ohio Senator Rob Portman announced that he opposes his party’s bill in its current form.

In a written statement Portman said he can’t support the proposed cuts to Medicaid while Ohio faces an opioid epidemic. He said he’s concerned that slashing Medicaid funding will make it harder for people to access drug treatment.

McConnell announced Tuesday that the Senate won’t consider the bill until after its July 4 ^th recess.

After the vote was postponed, Portman and the rest of the Senate’s Republicans met with President Trump at the White House.

Portman announced his opposition in a joint statement issued with West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito. She also criticized the bill’s cuts to Medicaid and said it doesn’t do enough to combat the opioid crisis.
