Ohio Death Row Inmate Denied Clemency

Featured Audio

Governor Kasich has denied clemency for death row inmate Abdul Hamin Awkal. Back in 1992, he was convicted of murdering his wife, who had filed for divorce and custody of his then 15 month old daughter, and convicted of killing his brother-in-law in a Cleveland courthouse. Police officers shot Awkal in the back to keep him from harming his baby.

Kasich’s decision follows the recommendation of the Ohio Parole Board which voted 8 to 1 against clemency for Akwal. His attorneys argued he is mentally ill and shouldn’t be executed.

Barring any last minute court intervention, he will be executed June 6 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
