Jury Selection to Begin in Artists Murder Case

Masumi Hayashi was an internationally known photographer and John Jackson was well-regarded for his painting and sculptural works. Their shooting deaths in a west side condominium building last August stunned Northeast Ohio's arts and cultural community. Hayashi's neighbor Jacob Cifelli is accused of the crime. She had made a number of complaints about the volume of his stereo system that summer, and police claim that, on one fatal day, he met her at the door of the third floor dwelling with a .40 caliber gun. Jackson's body was found near the first floor building entrance. Cifelli has pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated murder. County prosecutor Steven Dever expects jury selection to last through Friday, with the trial getting underway by Monday. David C. Barnett, 90.3.
