Ohioans are bitterly divided about whether or not to build a casino in Wilmington, a city between Columbus and Cincinnati. The proposal – called Issue 6 - is up for a vote on Nov. 4.
Advocates say a casino will not only create new jobs in the Wilmington area but bring much needed tax revenues to every county in the state. Supporters also say building the casino will keep Ohio’s gambling money from being spent at casinos in neighboring states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Indiana.
Critics claim loopholes could allow the casino company to pay zero taxes. They also argue that casinos don’t create jobs, but kill them when people become bogged down in gambling debts.
Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen examines both sides of the issue in this 30 minute documentary. Listen and decide for yourself on how to vote next Tuesday.
