Governor Ted Strickland has signed into law a bill that increases penalties for human trafficking. Because of this law, the crime is now a stand alone second degree felony. The Buckeye state now joins 44 other states that treat human trafficking that way. According to a recent study, there are nearly 6,000 young Ohioans who are at risk of becoming human slaves each year. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal enterprise in the world bringing in an estimated $36 billion a year for its operators. Supporters of this new law say by increasing penalties here criminals who profit from it are more likely to stay away from Ohio.
