Federal Reserve Examines College Majors by Race and Ethnicity

A review of educational data by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland found similarities and differences in choice of college major when broken down along lines of race and ethnicity.

Fed researcher Peter Hinrichs said business, nursing, biology and psychology were popular among all students. He said he found white and Asian students were more likely to major in engineering and math-related subjects.

"But then on the other hand," Hinrichs said, "there are other majors that black and Hispanic students are more likely to major in than white or Asian students, such as public administration and social service majors, like social work, for example."

Hinrichs said  there isn't enough research yet to explain why this might be. He said he's looking into the relationship between college major choice and income later in life.
