Cuyahoga Voting Machines Get Tested

Problems that delayed the vote count for hours resurfaced last Sunday during the tabulation of the the Nov. 6 election results, with no definitive cause in sight.

At a board meeting to certify the official vote count numbers, county ballot services managers reported that 39 memory cards could not be read on election night. The cause is thought to be the same software bug that plagued previous elections.

Those difficulties were enough for board members to decide that some hands-on attention is warranted from the vendor. Next week, officials from Premier elections systems, formerly Diebold of Stark County, will come to Cleveland to conduct tests.

And at least one board member is moving toward the view that the Premier system cannot handle the demands of Cuyahoga's Fourteen hundred-plus precincts.

Rob Frost says the board needs to be certain they have found the root of the problem.

Bite: I can tell you we keep uncovering new problems as we solve old ones.

There's not much time to figure it all out. Recounts are scheduled for up to nine suburban races over the next two weeks, a recall election of Cleveland City Councilman Joe Santiago is scheduled for December 18 and Ohio's presidential primary is set for Tuesday, March 4.
