Cleveland Councilman Chosen to Lead National League of Cities

ideastream's Rick Jackson speaks with Cleveland City Councilman Matt Zone

The National League of Cities this month elected Cleveland City Councilman Matt Zone to be its president.  The group represents and advocates for city officials.  Speaking on “ideas” on WVIZ/PBS, Zone says he wants to focus on economic mobility and opportunity.

"The income gap is just continuing to grow.  People feel really marginalized.  And centered right in the middle of economic mobility and opportunity is the issue of race.  Not only race, it’s equity. And people have a hard time talking about that.  I feel very comfortable in this space. So I’m hoping to use the knowledge that I’ve gained being a municipal leader in Cleveland, share that knowledge with my colleagues throughout the country."

Zone previously served as the National League of Cities’ Vice President.  He’ll spend a year serving in the top leadership role.
