Council Member Mamie Mitchell [Cleveland City Council]

A change in the makeup of Cleveland city council is expected today, with the resignation of one member and the appointment of a mayoral ally to take her place.

Ward 6 Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell is stepping down. She represents the city’s Fairfax neighborhood, including the area that’s home to the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals.

A city council spokesperson said the resignation is for personal reasons.

Mitchell nominated Blaine Griffin to take her place. He’s currently the director of city’s community relations board and the vice chairman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party. Four years ago, Griffin ran Mayor Frank Jackson’s reelection campaign.

Council is set to vote today to confirm his nomination. Griffin will serve out the rest of Mitchell’s term, which lasts until the end of the year. He’ll have the opportunity to run for the office this fall.
