Cleveland Cavaliers Trade Away Six Players, Go Younger.

That was quick. GM Koby Altman (L) traded away former Celtic Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder, received in the Kyrie Irving trade. Ante Zizic (R) is still with the team. [Mark Urycki / ideastream]

The oldest team in basketball has traded away a bunch of its players and gotten younger. The Cleveland Cavaliers made deals with several teams today to get a whole new roster as they fall to a disappointing 3 rd place in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James is still here. But the two Boston Celtics picked up in September for Kyrie Irving are gone. Isiah Thomas and Channing Frye are going to the Los Angeles Lakers. Jae Crowder and Derrick Rose go to Utah. Dwayne Wade goes back to Miami. Iman Shumpert goes to Sacramento.

Cleveland gave up a first round and a second round draft pick and will get a second round draft pick in the trades.

Thomas missed half the season with a hip injury and was never much of a factor making a dismal 36 percent of his shots and was critical of his teammates.

From LA, the Cavs get guard Jordan Clarkson and favorite son, Larry Nance Junior, who attended Revere High school in Bath.

Like LeBron James and Steph Currry, Nance was born in Akron. Nance’s father was a forward for the great Cavaliers teams of the late 80’s early 90’s. He still works as a coordinator for the team.

Cavaliers GM Koby Altman issued this statement:

“Jordan and Larry add athleticism, energy and length to both ends of the court for us. This trade is also a reflection of our continuing commitment to invest in our roster in ways that help us evolve and compete at the highest level now and into the future.

“Channing Frye is a champion, true pro and great person. He has been part of a special group of teammates on and off the court for us, as his impacts were both tangible and intangible. It is difficult to see him go and we wish Channing and his family the very best. IT (Thomas) has had a difficult and very challenging basketball journey over the last year as he has worked extremely hard to make progress in his return to play. He is a true competitor and that will certainly help him in his continued work on the court.”

The Cavs also picked up young shooting guard Rodney Hood from Utah and veteran point guard George Hill, a good 3-point shooter, from Sacramento.

If the four new players can get to Atlanta in time, they can help the Cavs take on the Hawks Friday night.
